VRJS has been facilitating Girls’ Circles in middle schools since early 2010. The program is a gender-specific support group for at-risk female youth in grades 6, 7 and 8. Many young women in Victoria and Esquimalt are engaged in behaviours that put them at risk of sexual abuse, violence, substance abuse, sexually transmitted diseases, dropping out, and teen pregnancy. Girls’ Circle provides an opportunity for vulnerable young women to create authentic relationships within a context of their own setting and community. It focuses on the strengths of the participating girls and is non-judgmental, caring, confidential and fun. The ultimate goal is for participants to develop a set of coping and adjusting skills that will enable them to become productive members of society.
VRJS is currently facilitating Girls’ Circles in Rock Heights every Wednesday from 1-2:50 pm and in Central Middle School every Thursday from 11:45 am-1:45 pm. Each meeting begins with healthy snacks, then the participants work on activities, take part in discussions and volunteer their time for community outreach.
Changes participants noted in themselves were:
“I have a lot more respect for others and myself.”
“I’ve learned to be patient and respectful.”
Participants stated that they learned:
“Respect and honesty.”
“Anything is possible, we can do it.”
VRJS is very grateful for the financial support of Zonta and the Law Foundation, who are the funders of both Girls’ Circle programs currently being offered.
